Death to Life

Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.  John 12:24

Jesus knew why He had come.  Only through His death could He bring life.  All of His wonderful words, His mighty miracles and His acts of kindness could not take away the sin of the world.  Only His sacrificial death could accomplish that.  So He reminds His disciples that a kernel of wheat lies dormant until it is planted.  Only when the seed dies, can it bring forth new life.

The same principle applies in our lives as well.  To the extent we live only to please ourselves, we will remain dormant and unfruitful.  Like a seed, we were created by God to bear fruit.  This only happens as we die to our selfish desires and surrender ourselves to Christ.

As Paul wrote in Romans 8:5: “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”
